News
for November 12, 2008
What’s new at
the library? Teen Talk is a
new column in the TI Sun that is sponsored by the Hawn Memorial Library.
This column may or may not be weekly but it will always be authored
by teen students who will review a book to inform other teens the quality
and theme of a book. Students
may use the same report for the Teen Talk column that they have submitted
to a teacher for a grade. So,
if you know any teens that might like to help write a column, have them
send their information to hawnlibrary@hotmail.com
and to include “book review” on the subject line.
The Friends of
the Library have changed the meeting this month and it will now be held on
Tuesday, November 18, at 1 p.m.
The library will be closed on Thursday, November 27, in celebration
of Thanksgiving.
Master
Gardner Jim Titus will be holding his annual wreath making classes on
November 20th and on December 2nd. Both
of Jim’s classes will be held at 7 p.m. at DeLuke’s Lawnscapes on
Rt 12 at 7 p.m. This year, Jim
will be giving instructions on the very easy straw wreath assembly.
The fee for the workshop will be $10 per wreath. Please bring a
pair of gloves and some cutting utensils with you.
Contact the library at 686-3762 to register for this workshop.
A
Gingerbread House competition will be on display at the library on
November 24th, with two area professional bakers, Gloria
Schaber and Kim Sherman judging the competition.
Official rules are available at the library, so sign up at the
library and consider your design. Construct
your favorite gingerbread and be eligible for a $50 prize.
On
the evening of the Wassail Celebration, December 4th, you are invited to
come to the library at 5 p.m. and we will proceed to the Annual Tree
Lighting on Riverside Drive in a candlelight procession.
After the tree lighting, we will come back to the library and enjoy
traditional refreshments and the lighting of the library tree. All are
encouraged to wear period costumes. With
the very popular storyteller Judy Keeler, we will enjoy a tale or two.
Enjoy an evening of family fun and holiday festivities.
The
ball gown sale will begin at the Hawn Memorial Library on December 1 at 9
a.m. to extend through 4 p.m. We
will continue the sale on December 2 for the same time.
All gowns are gently used and will be priced from $20 - $75.
We will be accepting donations of period gowns and accessories
for the sale, and all sales will be final.
The
Dickens Festivities have become so busy this year.
On the 6th, there will be numerous activities at the
library, as well around the Village of Clayton.
The Friends of the Library have sponsored the horse and carriage
rides around the village for your convenience.
There will be vendors, storytellers, and singers of holiday songs
to enjoy. Clayton will come
alive with the sights and sounds of the season.
This will be a full day to enjoy in the Library and the Village.
This will be a perfect day to shop for Christmas.
Gather the Dickens ornaments from six stores in the village to
enter a drawing for $100 at the library.
On
the 10th of December,
the famed characters, Scrooge and Father Christmas will be hosting
the afternoon story time at 4 p.m. with stories and crafts and holiday
favorites.
The
final day of the Dickens Festivals will be the evening of December 13th.
Chef Mike Simpson, owner of the Clipper Inn, will present a
fantastic Gourmet Dickens Dinner, a four course feast in the 3rd floor
Ball Room of the Clayton Opera House.
Dinner and a Ball Package will run $100, and tickets must be
purchased at the library. No
ticket will be sold at the door. The
Grand Dickens Ball tickets are also available separately for a fee of $25.
Dance to the Frank Sacci Orchestra from 7-midnight with canapés
and desserts, and a cash bar offered. The
Hawn Memorial Library Arts Alliance will present a chance for some
Christmas shopping with a festive Silent Auction through the evening.
